They think that the _creation_ of music is being discouraged by lack of monetary return? Apparently these [insert judgmental word here] haven't cottoned on to the concept that people who make music and want to make fair money from it _aren't recording and contracting with them anymore_.

Yeah, that's a good point – haven't a lot of artists founded their own record companies because they were being bilked out of their royalties? (I'm thinking the Beatles here, but I'm not sure.)

I hadn't even thought of that particular aspect of it until you brought it up-- the big names founding their own record companies. I happened to be thinking of small beginners who would like the opportunity for their music to be heard and realize that contracting with large record companies means their promotions, tours, all of it are at the whim of managers who might decide someone else in a slew of competitors is the more interesting prospect at the moment.

That's probably a better point, now that you mention it – Paul Simon, for example, isn't going to be playing forever, and if the next big hit is a group who everybody has heard because their music is online, well....
