It's apparently a new instrument - developed about 7 years ago in Switzerland, and there's only two people who make them, so they're not common at all.

I just can't believe the range of tones he's getting out of one instrument which is basically just two domes of metal.

I know - he gets some nice sounds out of it. A little bit like bells, in that it's metal ringing, but more controlled.
