Do you volunteer your time or donate money to any charitable organizations? Which ones, and why?

I donate a lot of blood to the American Red Cross. Mostly because of Hal Clement.

No, I'm serious. I was reading Hal Clement books all the time as I grew up, and the biography always mentioned that he donated a lot of blood.

Hey, it's as good a reason as any!

My life has been made up of a series of ways I have managed to avoid donating blood. I have to go volunteer route.

It's a nice thing to do when you can - I often do the "double-the-difference" donation, where they use apheresis to take extra red blood cells - but it's not really an obligation.

Do you find it makes you feel better a few days after donating?

Not particularly - I feel better that day and the next just out of pride, but usually I'm not thinking about it anymore by the time a week's past.

Hmm... I used to find that giving whole blood made me feel 'brighter'... more energy and such. I've since switched to giving plasma once a fortnight, as it's more needed here atm than whole blood.
