Anyone else remember Spoon?
I wanna say we found out about Spoon from the Will Ferrell movie "Stranger Than Fiction" - which I gather is actually pretty weird as Will Ferrell movies go, because it's kind of serious? Kinda like how "The Truman Show" wasn't what you would expect from antivax guy. "Stranger Than Fiction" is a movie about dealing with your upcoming mortality, looking at your life from the outside, and also about the potential conflict between artistic vision and impact. Also some casual anti-atheism for no reason but shh.
Anyway, one of the people behind the soundtrack was a singer-songwriter named Britt Daniel, and it included some songs from the band he was in, Spoon. Like, for example, "The Way We Get By", which was on Kill the Moonlight a few years earlier. So we kinda knew Spoon from that movie, and then we got Kill the Moonlight and then we knew Spoon from that album.
And, like, "The Way We Get By" is kinda subtle, isn't it? It's also just a banger but it's emotionally perceptive about a kind of nihilistic state that people get buried in sometimes.
Anyway, we had that album and the Stranger Than Fiction soundtrack in our iTunes library for years, and then out of the blue one day two years ago we discovered that Spoon ... still exists?
"The Hardest Cut" hits hard. It's a rock song. The whole Lucifer on the Sofa album hits hard.
This post is nothing. Just, today we were looking for something to listen to and we remembered that Spoon exists.
