I had a chat with my mother this (late) afternoon, and it's making me realize a few things.

Remember when I (dramatically) announced a hiatus here, a couple months ago, on the grounds that I was wasting too much of my time?

It didn't exactly work.

Oh, I passed my classes. I got good grades, even – some would say great grades, actually. But I didn't exactly cut my Internet time much. And you know how increased irritability, losing track of time, and putting off necessary work are signs of addiction?

I turned in an effin' incomplete four page paper for an assignment which asked for twelve plus. I should be revoking everything I ever said about Professor Wappel being a hard grader – I would have given myself a 40% or worse on that monster, and no better than a B in the class! And the B would only be because I had perfect attendance and great class participation – I'd have given me a C if it weren't for that!

(For the record, I don't hold as high an opinion of the textbook as Prof. Wappel does, but he was a good teacher, and he's forgiving if he thinks you showed improvement. I wholeheartedly recommend him for any University of Maryland student who wants to take ENGL393: Technical Writing.)

I have a problem.

What will this mean in terms of what I do?

First, I'm switching to reading journals on my friends page. Anyone off LJ I'll keep using tabs; anyone on LJ that I read, and haven't friended, I'll friend (and notify). I think that'll help speed things a little.

Second, I'm dropping most of the webcomics I read. I'll stick some in "Check Monthly" or something, a couple in "Keep Up With", the rest in "Used to Read".

Third, Yahoo! Answers? IIDB? NationStates? Drop to weekly or less.

Fourth, I get in the habit of doing stuff offline.

I know a couple people actually read this journal. What'll change here? Not much. Writing is still something I want to do.

Hey, maybe I'll even have something real to write about.
