If one must de-"man"-ify the word, I rather like "ombuds". I am not, however, picky.

I guess "ombuds" is all right – were it my job, though, I might end up throwing in the towel and calling it "public advocate" or something.

I like that on its own merits — seems to me the function of the office is much more transparent to your man on the Clapham ommnibus when called that.

Plus, it's already in use (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22public+advocate%22&btnG=Search), meaning pretty close to the same thing.
