Is it just me, or does this sort of thing evoke a false sense of importance for itself?

Well, I suppose those may have a bit of an amplifying effect. ;)

Really, though, what I imagined was that suddenly the Washington Post, the New York Times, the Vancouver Sun, the BBC, the CNN, everybody, said, "let's apply the same level of attention to ailado that we do to Britney Spears". What would you do?

I don't even know. I'd probably go batshit insane just like she did. I'd never want to be that famous. I might consider offing myself, actually. I like my privacy.
