They don't want to merely ask you if your food was "hot", because sometimes that's not a good thing; if you had ordered a cold salad, for instance. I read this as them trying to communicate the concept of "was the food at an appropriate temperature for what it was s'posed to be" in as concise a fashion as they could. Alas, clarity suffered.
