After a certain point, you simply have to admit that you're hooked. Well, here it is.

Inform 7 is cool. I'm writing a text adventure.

Will I enter something in IFComp 2007? Dunno. Will I get involved with the IF community? Dunno. Will I give it up after a week? Probably Dunno. But if you feel like offering encouragement, commentary, or critique (or just listening to me talk), I'm setting up a filter for IF stuff now – just drop in a comment, and I'll put you in.

(It's either bad or good that all my ideas seem to involve writing new 'rules' for the game – I don't know which.)

I'm there! Put me on that sucka.

You're in! I'll probably make a post about my text adventure ideas in a minute.

Darnit, now I want to try to write Infocom 7 adventures again too. I was never very good at it--partly because my ideas always exceeded my skill, leaving me frustrated--but it's such a marvelous tool.

Well, I think I can say with some confidence that my ideas are cah-ray-zay. Details in a second.

Oooh... IF. You'll need testers, and I might get inspired.

(but make a maze or a 'guess-the-verb' puzzle, and I will end you)

Adding to the filter now! First post's already up.

And don't worry – guess-the-verb games are #2 on my list of Things-You-Don't-Do-These-Ever-And-I-Mean-It. (Unplayably-buggy is #1, natch.)

Please tell me mazes are #3.

Uhh ....

*quickly edits list*

Of course! And #4 is oops-you-die traps (http://www.absurdnotions.org/page38.html), #5 is requiring the player to "wait" for tons of turns, and #6 is introducing weird conflicts of item names (e.g. "the button" and "the blue button").

I'm still missing something, aren't I? *starts scanning list again*

Allow me to introduce you to my friend Leonard.

http://www.crummy.com/

He has written several IF games you might appreciate, especially if your thoughts run the way it sounds. I'm not sure where on the site they are, but I remember them being easy to find.

Cool, I'll check them out.

Add you to the filter?

I've written a couple of IF games (under still other pseudonyms), and have dipped my toe into the IF community, though I never got seriously involved.

I still want to someday soon finish up the first game I tried to write in Inform...the problem is, it was way too ambitious for a first game, and I made the mistake of trying to enter it into an IFComp with too little time to spare, so...um...it had problems. But I still think the idea and the planning of the game was good, even if the execution suffered, and I'm determined to get it done the way it was supposed to be...one of these days...

Oh, and yeah, go ahead and include me in the filter.
Friday, July 27th, 2007 11:28 am (UTC)
Well, it's my first shot, so I'm not expecting too much – as it stands, I'm saving my really-ambitious adventure idea for at least #2. ;)

We have a new player, who followed all the rules for joining nomicide, but is using a freshly-minted journal.

While it's certainly possible to evict them if they don't actually do anything, I'm just kind of curious: is this player a sock for someone you know?

Half a sec.

*checks*

I have no idea. I put an ad on the xkcd forum (http://forums.xkcd.com/viewtopic.php?t=8549&highlight=), but nobody answered it there, so...
