Thingbits

  • Unfortunately, the turkey pot pi was somewhat underwhelming.
  • I'm thinking an external hard drive might be handy. LaCie is good, right? I should probably shop around a little.
  • I got XTC, Tom Petty, and Alanis Morissette CDs today!
  • Naturally, I am dismayed at Livejournal reaching new, untouched levels of idiocy by deleting the Basic Account option for new users. Like certain wise people (only with more laziness), I am honestly thinking about striking out on my own and just reading/reposting here. For the less lazy pessimistic, though: thanks to [livejournal.com profile] conuly, a update with the proper RL contact info for complaining.
  • To the guy about the IF thing: it's still rattling around in my head - expect mail soon.
  • Anybody around here play Core War or interested in starting? (Bear in mind I'm still yak shaving - do you believe that OS 10.3.9 didn't come with GCC installed? - so I won't be sending any warriors up any hills yet.)
  • Looking at the stack of lab reports that need grading, it seems my panicking skills are fully intact. Also my procrastination skills.
  • It's quarter to midnight? Okay, I gotta go to bed - ciao!
  • (P.S. Does anyone know how to fix a flaky trackpad on an iBook G4? The button keeps sticking.)

Thanks for posting these links.

LaCie are excellent and have worked closely with Apple, and I'd also recommend Western Digital or Seagate HDDs.

Are you planning on writing an IF? They're such fun things to create, and the IFComp is several months away, plenty of time to write a good one and test it...

Good luck with the lab papers. I, too, have a pile I ought to do this weekend...

No prob!

Mph, LaCie's site is head and shoulders above theirs. I'll have to go in and compare the prices anyway, though.

IF? I am thinking about it. Do you want to be on my IF filter? (Don't know if I'll have it running in time for IFComp, though - I have no confidence in my perseverance/productivity.)

Ah, my condolences. I'm lucky; my school's spring break just hit, so I got an extra week to work on them. (Of course, it's not really a break if you have work hanging over your head...)

Quality of product rates more highly with me than quality of website (call me old-fashioned... also, rating a human by their blog is probably not a good idea, either). LaCie also charge you for their website and reputation... and I'd only rely on an external drive for security for three or so years, anyway... after which if the data is truly valuable it's probably time to update.

Filter, yes please! I love IFs, especially writing them.

My uni kids are on Easter break in a week, too, but I don't see them for a fortnight in the meantime due to alternative activities. Plus the marking will take very little actual time. I tend to mark while watching a movie or episodes of something or another on DVD. The time flies.

Go to Newegg.com and check out all the external drives. LaCie is very good, but the Western Digital MyBook I got is awesome and I got a better price than what LaCie was offering for comparable drives.

On LiveJournal: I guess I'm a snob.

I always viewed Myspace as a co-ed high-school sleepover when the parents were out of town.

LiveJournal's like living in the college dorms - more civilized, but you're still sharing a bathroom with your 20 closest neighbors, even if you don't like them. (Xanga's the same, only at a small private junior college that doesn't advertise well.)

Facebook is a college in the middle of the city with six separate campuses that require me to learn both the bus and the subway in order to navigate, and they tore up all the maps. There must be some skill to navigating that place that only those under 25 are privvy to, because damned if I (or most of the people my age at work) can figure it out. What's the cheat code to see the map? Up up down down left right left right select star?

Anyway, at some point, you graduate. Sometimes you get your own place before they boot you out the door and charge you $30 for your own damn diploma, and sometimes you don't. At any rate, you're probably at a point now where it's time to shop for your own place.

Please let me introduce you to the world of Wordpress. There's Wordpress.com if you're looking for a nice dorm-style apartment - free blogging similar to Livejournal (features here (http://wordpress.com/features/)).

And there's Wordpress.org, for when you've bought the land (domain) and you're ready to build your own house.

If you want/need the flexibility of a full host (posting photos, video, etc. storing you stuff, knowing that your domain name won't change because it's *yours*) I have only excellent things to say about hostmonster (http://www.hostmonster.com/) and Wordpress makes some recommendations for hosting here (http://wordpress.org/hosting/) as well.

(hm, that metaphor worked better than I expected. I might repost that one.)

On the trackpad, try cleaning it (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=17228). I've been cruel enough in the past to flip the laptop and shake it to get crud out from under the buttons, and when truly desperate I've even taken the case apart, but that's many many many steps and it may be worth it to have the Geniuses take a glance first.

:)

Oh, but of course. I was just commenting.

Filter: you have been added!

Y'know, I never got the hang of doing things while watching things. I can play background music, but background TV or video is just too distracting.

Thanks for the tips! I'll check out Newegg; that is a lovely conceit, and I'll certainly start looking into getting a domain and Wordpress running; and, unfortunately, shaking the laptop upside-down did not dislodge whatever it is that's sticking the mousepad button.
