Dagnabbit, I was shaving the wrong yak, and Apple doesn't even seem to have the right one for download any more (10.3.9 here). Fortunately, although weirdly, I had started shaving the right yak I-don't-know-when and I just found the fleece, so I might be able to continue anyway.

In regards to the version... tried Version Tracker? It's not beyond reason that they might have an older edition lurking about.

Oh, no, there's nothing wrong with the compiler, I think - it's that the Core War code I'm compiling wants to include something-or-other from the X11 directory, and the X11 directory isn't where the code wants it to be. In other words, exactly the fiddly sort of thing that someone with experience could fix in a few minutes and a n00b couldn't fix at all.
